Portland State University Overview

Portland State University has been emboldening students and challenging the status quo in Portland for 75 years. From our founding to serve veterans home from World War II, we have been committed to meeting the needs of individual students and society as a whole.

We first opened in 1946 as the Vanport Extension Center for 220 students in Vanport, a city built to house wartime shipyard workers. Since then, we have grown into Oregon’s most diverse urban public research university with 26,000 students and more than 200 degree programs.

Portland State University is more than Portland’s public research university. It’s a place to test ideas and projects that show the world how different is done. Our innovative approach combines education with creative problem-solving and collaboration across campus for maximum impact.

Life at Portland State University

PSU has been an integral part of downtown Portland, Oregon since the 1950s. From our 44-acre campus, students can walk to internships, bike along the Willamette River, and catch a city streetcar for free. It’s no wonder Niche ranks Portland State as the best college location in America. Life at PSU is as exciting as our city. Join one of our 200 student groups. Swim, take a fitness class or rock climb in our modern student rec center. Get care in our student health and counseling center. And find all the support you need to succeed. Discover a vibrant city known for its locally roasted coffee, farm-to-table restaurants and lively music scene. Powell’s, the world’s largest independent bookstore, is a short streetcar ride from campus. And the Pacific Ocean and Mt. Hood are both within a 90-minute drive.
