Some background on IELTS

IELTS is the most popular English language proficiency test designed for non-native English speakers to assess their language skills. It is the most popular English Proficiency test in the world with more than 3 million test-takers annually.

IELTS scores are accepted by most of the universities in the world, especially in Australia, Britain, Canada, New Zealand and The United States. IELTS is a major academic prerequisite that opens doors to international education. According to experts, the best way to ace the IELTS test is by thorough preparation and attempting an IELTS sample paper.

IELTS has two different modules; General and Academic. While the general module is for candidates planning to work abroad or for immigration purposes, students who wish to study abroad take up the academic module.

IELTS syllabus includes four sections: Listening, speaking, Reading & Writing and The total test time is 2 hours and 45 minutes.

Listening

The listening paper has a total of 40 questions divided in 4 different tasks which are to be finished in 30 minutes.

Speaking

Speaking test is an interview with the examiner which lasts up to 11-14 minutes. The test consists of 3 tasks.

Reading

The reading paper has 3 passages with a total of 40 questions divided into a number of tasks. The candidate is expected to complete the paper in 60 minutes.

Writing

Writing test consists of two sections with a total test time of 60 minutes. Section one consists of various types of visual information and section two consists of a topic to write not more than 250 words.

Ways to take IELTS

Currently IELTS test can be taken in two ways, IELTS paper based and computer delivered.

IELTS Paper Based:

This test requires test takers to sit at a desk with the question papers and answer sheets for the Reading, Listening and Writing tests in an official IELTS test centre. Test takers will write their answers in either pen or HB-pencils. The Speaking test is carried out face-to-face with a trained IELTS examiner.

IELTS Computer Delivered:

This test requires test takers to sit the Reading, Listening and Writing tests in front of a computer with the questions presented on the screen in an official IELTS test centre. The test takers then submit their answers through the use of a keyboard and a mouse. The Speaking test is not on computer and is carried out face-to-face with a trained IELTS examiner. 

IELTS Scoring System

The IELTS score is based on 0-9 bands. Each paper of IELTS weighs 9 bands. The individual scores of each paper are rounded up to a final score. If the average of the four sections ends in .25, the overall band score is rounded up to the next half band, and if it ends in .75, the overall band score is rounded up to the next whole band.

Usually, universities expect at least 6.5-7 bands. Some universities might ask for individual paper scores as well. Listening and reading scores depend on the number of correct answers. While the writing scores are based on completion of the task and its grammatical accuracy. The scores of speaking are based on fluency, pronunciation, grammatical accuracy.
